Taisho Roman Champagne Flute Ichimatsu
For 120 years since its establishment in 1899, HIROTA GLASS has been dedicated to glass manufacturing. Now the company is under the 4th generation glassmaker, and has evolved its own signature style through harmonisation of European traditional glassmaking technique with Japanese artistry. Hirota Glass stays true to its classic designs and influences dating back to the pre-war period, continuing to push hand-crafted glass to its artistic limits.
In 2002, Hirota Glass developed a new artisan glassware series with a focus on the reproduction of classic products that were popular back in the Taisho period.
The Taisho period was characterized politically by an interest in universal suffrage and a comparatively liberal mood in the arts. It was sometimes viewed as a romantic, euphoric period of cultural creativity following the more conservative Meiji era and preceding the militaristic mood of the Showa period. The naming of “Taisho Roman Glass” is in retrospect of the Taisho period which depicts dream, passion, and adventure.
“Nyuuhaku-glass-aburidashi” is a traditional glassmaking technique which has been popular during Taisho period. Through trial and error, Hirota Glass managed to resurrect this opalescent-coloured glassmaking technique. Taisho Roman Glass is a type of milky white glassware made using this special technique. The opalescent colours are made of calcium which is applied not by painting-like, but by a special blowing technique by the skilled glass artisans. When the hot glass touches the mold, the sudden change of temperature develops the colour of opal.
Contrasting the opaque black stand to the translucent milky white glass, this Taisho Roman glass series is specially designed for enhancing the drinking and tasting of wine, champagne and sake.
