Wood sculptor based in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture in Japan.
Uda Masashi studies furniture design at polytechnic. After graduating from design school, he joined a prop company, tailor-making crafts in stage sets. Later he found his passion on rather smaller functional objects and set up his own studio, ”monom(モノム)”, locating in a quiet mountain village in Chichibu. Masashi is now focusing on crafting tableware and home items from locally and responsibly sourced Japanese wood.
What makes Masashi’s work one-of-a-kind is the unique shapes of the wood pieces. A shape, according to Masashi, contains “affection” that produces an emotional tie between the user and the wood piece. The pieces Masashi creates are designed asymmetrically, warped or round-edged, embracing irregular organic form, and make people smile and relaxed.
